Nominet Tagholder

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Just heard back from Nominet, our Membership has gone through and our tag BRIGHTSIDE should be live at 9 pm tonight!

Been on the phone a couple of times to them this week, they’re got the world’s best hold music. Rolling Stones, Gimmi Shelter. Was on hold a moment ago so had to open up iTunes on the iPhone and buy it that second!

If that’s not a direct action at the moment of inspiration nothing is.

Buying music on the iPhone is one thing, what about buying a .co.uk .mobi or .com on your mobile and having it registered in realtime.

The idea is you’re out and about in the city / town / on the bus / anywhere, have a great idea for a site or a brilliant domain springs to mind, you use a mobile site to check the availability, if it’s free click the order now link, go through the simple / almost form free checkout process and in realtime have an account provisioned on the hosting admin panel and your domain registration happen seamlessly.

Sound good? I know as an eNom ETP I could just go to eNom.mobi to register stuff but that defeats the challenge. :)

A nice little teaser for anyone wondering where all the domain registration and hosting stuff was heading and how it relates to the regular mobile content on my site.

Pay Offline new payments system from Alliance and Leicester

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

This is interesting, not a mobile thing again but it’s left me wondering how much work would be involved in making this a mobile friendly service:

www.payoffline.com

If the customer has to print a bar-code they then take to the shop it sounds perfect to be hacked (in a nice way) to support sending the bar-code to the mobile! It gets rid of the need to waste more trees by printing stuff out.

It’s a thought anyway and nice to see the off-line payments folk changing their business model to a more open and attractive one for merchants of all sizes. Years ago I looked at accepting PayZone or similar for the ringtone sites, they wanted money up front, fees each month and offered worse out-payments than the networks.

Now for merchants there’s limited free signup and out payments that spank SMS. I’d like this for the ringtones and for the hosting, it’d be sweet to accept cash over the counter at thousands of retail outlets.

Chargeback free payments up to £999, the possibility of making it work on a mobile too!

This sounds pretty cool if you ask me.

Earthquakes in Loughborough

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Just been chilling on the settee watching utter junk on TV when all of a sudden there was a bit of a bump, followed by another, another bump was followed by a rumble by which point the whole house started wobbling and did so for a good few seconds.

WTF - this is Loughborough, Leicestershire, hardly what I consider to be a likely place for earthquake rumblings…..

Odd, spooky and to be honest a bit scary in a “I have absolutely no control over this” way.

Nominet Registrar Assessment

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Guess who just scored 93% on the Nominet Registrar Assessment? I’m a bit pissed I didn’t get 100% that would be smug but 19.6 out of 21 as a score is good enough for me when the pass rate is 75%

A little celebration is called for I think, anyone for Bollinger?

Yes, I do have interests outside mobile web stuff………
